Distinguished and Famous people from Alstonville

Alstonville's notable connections include wartime service, the protection of a rainforest remnant and a screen career that began in the Northern Rivers. These are different kinds of distinction, each with a specific local link.

🎖️ Patrick Joseph “Paddy” Bugden VC

Paddy Bugden's family made their home at Alstonville's Federal Hotel after his mother and stepfather bought it in 1914. Born at Tatham, he served with the 31st Battalion in the First World War. His actions at Polygon Wood in 1917 included attacks on machine-gun positions and repeated efforts to rescue wounded men. Killed during the fighting, he received the Victoria Cross posthumously. Alstonville commemorates him with a memorial, preserving the town's connection with his family and service.

🌿 William Ambrose Crawford

William Ambrose Crawford helped conserve and regenerate Alstonville's Lumley Park, a surviving fragment of the once extensive Big Scrub rainforest. His work with the Scrub Reserve Committee began in the 1930s and continued into his nineties. The project gained recognition beyond the district and is remembered by bush-regeneration organisations as an early example of ecological restoration. Here the local achievement is still living: a rainforest remnant protected through decades of practical attention.

🎭 Nicholas Hamilton

Actor Nicholas Hamilton grew up in Alstonville before appearing in films including Strangerland, Captain Fantastic and It. In the last of these he played bully Henry Bowers, a character he has described as very different from himself. As a teenager he worked alongside established performers including Nicole Kidman, Viggo Mortensen and Hugo Weaving. His interviews retain a recognisable Northern Rivers starting point behind a career that quickly took him to international film sets.
